In 2006 I participated in a group project that created a multi-lingual CD-Rom for younger children. For me this project was the turning point in my education and career that got me started with the development and design of user interfaces and applications for the web. This years group was from Marshall Elementary School. A total of 35 children constructed duct tape wallets from templates and their imaginations in 45 minutes with the help and instruction of iDo mentors.

At the end of the project each child was able to walk away with their very own creation, some had even done hand drawings or created personalities for their wallets. For example, my group turned their wallets into monstrous ticks and fleas with chains for horns. There is no limit to a child's imagination...Hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13143400665639492691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666893732747197012.post-4188536100341836392009-02-28T12:58:00.000-08:002009-02-28T13:05:35.505-08:00Edutopia & iDoWhile building the newly re-designed website I frequently visited Edutopia for inspiration and guidance in seeing, experiencing, and understanding how other non-profit educational organizations structured their site. I found that Edutopia and others rely heavily on imagery, video, and concise information to spread their information, as well as, participant feedback.

In addition to Edutopia, I also read about the Flat Classroom Project which creates group collaboration between schools on either side of the world. Today they were working on their line drawings, which they will transfer onto the foam core this coming Monday. Many of the students are very eager to learn new things, and they appeared extremely interested in Ryan's demo of clipping masks.

Tomorrow is a shortened day on campus, the students are having a fall festival, so that means they are on a Wednesday schedule.

Linder has asked that they finish up their line drawing in Illustrator tomorrow in preparation for Monday's transfer.

We were unable to video tape today, as I was unaware that we were missing tapes for the video camera, however, I secured both a SD chip and video tapes, so we are good to go for next week.

Hope everyone is doing well.

HollyHollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13143400665639492691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666893732747197012.post-8792061784534052062007-10-23T13:31:00.000-07:002007-10-23T16:44:10.804-07:0010/18 Thurgood Marshall Video FootageGreetings,

Gigi and I shot video footage from last Thursday's class at Thurgood Marshall, and I had it developed over the weekend. The quality isn't great, because of the file size, however, I do have larger files available that are of better quality. I am more than happy to make these files available for whomever would like them, just let me know.

Also, if anyone has video editing knowledge and would like to put it to use let me know. I think we can take these clips and make them into something even better.

=) Happy Viewing,

Holly

Hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13143400665639492691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666893732747197012.post-53720747510682171192007-10-22T10:59:00.000-07:002007-10-22T11:08:43.018-07:00Daily Log of In Classroom Events10.11 (Thursday)
My first day in the classroom. The students appeared hesitant and unsure as to what to do, or how to do brainstorming in a group. It was interesting to be around students who are hesitant to draw - one student commented that she didn't want to draw because she didnt know how to and it would not look good. A question that kept popping up in my head was, why are they affraid to draw? I do not draw particularly well, but I still try - I've come to love my stick figures - they're just a means of communicating an idea - it doesnt have to be perfect. How do I convey this to students? I drew my own community brainstorm sketches and told them, I dont draw well, but here is my community. That didnt seem to help them overcome their shyness.

Another observation was how hard it was to engage and get the students to verbally interact with each other or us as mentors.

10.12 (Friday)
More interaction, a bit more fluid.

10.18 (Thursday)

10.19 (Friday)Giovanna Ghiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02440201124250544558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666893732747197012.post-27940348003224402112007-10-15T09:57:00.000-07:002007-10-15T09:58:18.898-07:00Industrial Design Outreach Website Re-launches with a Fresh New Look and New Tools
Look at What's New with iDo!

Industrial Design Outreach Website Re-launches with a Fresh New Look and New Tools

Industrial Design Outreach (iDo) founded by Professor Martin S. I think all of us were really feeling pretty good about what was about to happen that day so we were pretty optimistic. After loading everything into our cars, we were off to Bayview. Though some of us got lost, we all made it to the school on time though were so illegally parked in the tiny staff parking lot that it was not even funny.

Linda, the principal's secretary greeted us warmly in the administrative office. After chatting her up a bit, we made it into the room that we're going to be working in. We weren't really quite sure what to expect seeing as the only things we had heard about it were that it was an old wood shop that may or may not have working equipment. I had hoped for the best and fortunately, the best is pretty much what we ended up with!

The place was a bit dusty, the bandsaw was fried and the electrical plugs weren't all working, but for the most part, it was perfect. It was huge, had ample tables for workspace, lots of storage, and the best part is that it had an amazing view of the city. I felt like IDO finally had a place to call home.

We worked for a few hours unpacking all of the great new tools and supplies that Joe's family had so graciously helped us to acquire. Daniel figured out how to get the bandsaw up and running again which was such a huge help. Gigi helped level all the tables while the rest of us labeled and organized and Seth grabbed us coffee! (Thanks again Seth) Though we were really productive, we were also having a lot of laughs and fun with each other as a team which I think was the most important part of the whole setup experience.

Unfortunately we realized that the Monday we were supposed to start on was Columbus day, so turns out we will have to start on Wednesday, October 10th. Though this already sort of throws our schedule off a few days, i'm sure we'll be fine.Clarissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17463646004260316146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666893732747197012.post-42429638697042618372007-10-03T23:33:00.001-07:002007-10-03T23:39:04.649-07:00Tomorrow's the day! It's the night before we go to Marshall as a team and actually see the space that we're going to be working in all semester long. I've got to say that I'm actually really excited.
